COMMEMORATE,
CELEBRATE, INSPIRE.

HONOURING OUR PAST, INSPIRING OUR FUTURE

The Spitfire is an enduring symbol of innovation, engineering excellence, hope and courage. The National Spitfire Project is the drive behind creating a world-class monument in Southampton, the birthplace of the Spitfire. The Monument will be the tallest stainless-steel sculpture in the world and will commemorate all of those involved in the Spitfire story, celebrate engineering excellence and inspire future generations.

FOR PROGRESS, FOR PEOPLE, FOR PEACE.

Supported by UK Government funding, the National Spitfire Project is fundraising to create a monument and a public engagement programme that honours the legacy of those who designed, flew and maintained the Spitfire.

A large sculpture of a Spitfire aeroplane mounted vertically on a tall curved plinth rises above a cityscape, with buildings and a grassy area visible under a blue sky with scattered clouds.
A modern waterside structure curves upward over the water, with people gathered on the platform. In the background are cranes, boats, and industrial buildings under a partly cloudy sky.
Aerial view of a circular memorial plaza by the water, featuring labelled plaques with colourful air force roundels, white seating, and the inscription “SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE honouring the aircraft and its makers.
A modern outdoor memorial space with people sitting and standing around a circular reflective pool; a plaque with text and images is displayed in the foreground on white stone steps.

a symbol for freedom
around the world

The National Spitfire Monument is set to be one of the UK’s most striking landmarks — standing taller than the Angel of the North and comparable in height to Nelson’s Column. This monument isn’t just about scale — it’s a symbol of innovation, sacrifice, and national pride.

Silhouettes compare the heights of four monuments: Angel of the North (20m), Our Monument (40m), Statue of Liberty (46m, not including plinth), and Nelson's Column (51m), each with corresponding measurements in feet.
